Welcome to
Tech Trek!
Tech Trek is about sustaining girls' interests in math and science.
AAUW of California's Tech Trek Science Camp for Girls is a one-week residential
summer scholarship camp for eighth graders. Tech Trek was founded in
1998 by AAUW Educational Foundation Community Action Grant in an effort to
encourage young women to continue studying science and math in middle school.
AAUW programs like Tech Trek Science Camp for Girls are changing the status quo
in math and science classes across the country. By connecting young women with
likeminded peers and mentors, these programs have a powerful effect on the lives
and career choices of future generations.
Tech Trek Science Camp for Girls provides a supportive environment for girls to
explore and expand their interests in science and math, with hands-on activities
and projects led by experienced, paid teachers in a college setting.
Tech Trek goals:
-
To encourage young women of all backgrounds who are
entering eight grade to take math and science courses each year throughout
high school.
-
To motivate these students to attend college and,
-
To inspire young women to consider careers in science,
technology, engineering, or math.
Today, Tech Trek camps are held on six California campuses: Stanford University,
the University of California San Diego, California State University Fresno,
Mills College, Whittier College, and the University of California Santa Barbara.
More than 4,200 girls have completed the program, which is still run by
volunteers, most of whom return for several years. Further growth has been
limited by lack of camp directors and space on campuses, there is a
waiting list every year. Of the 160 AAUW branches in California, 91
percent participate in the Tech Trek program.
